Every parent knows what a struggle it can be to get kids to eat the healthy foods. They want chicken nuggets, mac and cheese, and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches; hardly a healthy array of nutrition. For some, that pickiness continues as adults! So how do health conscious moms and wives keep the family healthy? By introducing those nutritious foods whenever you can; sometimes even being a little sneaky about it! Here are a few tips in getting even the pickiest eaters to benefit from seaweed.
There’s a good chance they may already be eating seaweed
If your family brushes their teeth or eats ice cream, they may already be getting a small amount of seaweed! How so? According to an article by the Cheadle Center for Biodiversity and Ecological Restoration, many of the products that we use every day contain extracts from seaweed.
Carrageenan is extracted from red algae and is used as a binder for certain foods including dog food (yes, dogs benefit from seaweed!), chocolate, toothpaste and baby food. Alginate comes from brown algae and is used to make water-based products thicker or creamier including some salad dressings, heartburn relief medicine and hand creams. Agar comes from red algae and is used as a food thickener and jelling agent which you may find in packaged danishes and smoothies. Of course, in all of these, the sparse amount of seaweed in the product won’t offer much in the way of health benefits but isn’t it interesting to know your picky eaters are already consuming seaweed?
Try some tasty seaweed snacks
Believe it or not, there is quite the array of delicious snacks made from seaweed including seaweed chips, seaweed crackers, seaweed trail mix and even seaweed cookies. If you have very cautious picky eaters, you may want to take these snacks out of the packaging so they’re unaware of what they’re eating! They may love them once they taste them! And yes, seaweed snacks can be healthy!
Add seaweed to soups, stews and smoothies
It’s understandable. Many people won’t eat seaweed because of the texture and the color. A great way to get even the pickiest eaters to benefit from seaweed is to add (hide) it in soups, stews and smoothies. There are many recipes on how to incorporate kale into these, and seaweed can be used in the same way. Seaweed is the new kale! There are also numerous seaweed recipes online; get creative!
Using a whole food seaweed supplement
Looking for a surefire way to get your picky kids and others to enjoy the benefits of seaweed? Give them a whole food seaweed supplement! For kids, find one that is in a tasty, chewable form; they will love it and not even know it’s good for them! If you try Sea Veg® seaweed supplements, you can take the capsule as is, or break it open and add it to a smoothie. It’s a great way to get all the healthy, nutritious benefits of seaweed without having to eat it in any form!
Getting even the pickiest eaters to benefit from seaweed can be a struggle but trying one or more of the ideas above may just do the trick!
