Ideas for Getting More Healthy Seaweed Into Your Health Routine

The list of health benefits from seaweed goes on and on. Seaweed offers many health benefits that we all should be taking advantage of but sometimes getting seaweed into your diet can be challenging. You’re either limited to what you get in a sushi restaurant, or for the super-adventurous, you may dabble in a seaweed recipe or two IF you can find it in a store near you. However, not everyone is willing to eat seaweed, wrapped around sushi, in a salad or otherwise. That doesn’t mean you should count out seaweed and sea vegetables in your diet! There are a few ways to get more healthy seaweed into your health routine. Keep reading to learn more!

First, a reminder about WHY seaweed is so healthy

We’ve touted the many benefits before, but we’re not the only ones writing about how good it is for you. There are many sites that talk about the health benefits of seaweed and how it may help with cancer prevention, weight loss, heart health and much more. Getting more seaweed into your diet is a good way to fight against many health problems that we face.

Your options for getting seaweed and sea veggies in your diet

Typically, getting health benefits straight from the source is a good idea no matter what you eat, but there are actually exceptions and seaweed may be one of those. Seaweed has iodine which is very healthy for you. Iodine is an important part of your diet. However, some seaweed contains a significant amount of iodine; too much may cause problems if you suffer from certain thyroid disorder. High levels of iodine are known to acutely suppress thyroid function and eventually cause goiter. If that’s the case with you, a high quality seaweed supplement might be the answer. A supplement will always have a controlled amount of iodine, so you never run any risk of excessive iodine by consuming the wrong kind of seaweed or sea vegetable.

On that note, it should be said that not all seaweed is that good for you.  While all seaweed is technically edible, some can cause an upset stomach and cannot be easily digested. Taking a supplement allows you to avoid that. All the benefit without the pain! Just be sure to take a supplement that that’s made from whole food, such as Sea Veg. The 12 seaweed varieties in Sea Veg supplements are some of the most nutritionally dense plants on the planet and also the most abundant source of minerals in the plant kingdom!

Of course, if you do want to eat seaweed, there are many ways to enjoy this superfood! The Integrative Nutrition blog lists several great ideas including:

  • Cook your beans with kombu. …
  • Snack on nori. …
  • Enhance your smoothies with spirulina. …
  • Add a dash of seaweed flakes to every meal. …
  • Mix in kelp or kombu to stocks, soups, and stews. …
  • Stir it into your salad dressing. …
  • Toss together a seaweed salad.

There’s even a recipe for seaweed cookies! Again, if you have thyroid issues, you probably want to avoid these yummy treats.
